André Roy
With a Ph.D from the department of geography at S.U.N.Y. Buffalo, André Roy came to the département de géographie at Université de Montréal in the mid-80's as a freshly-minted young professor. He quickly established himself as a dynamic research leader in the field of fluvial hydrology and at the same time become very rapidly on of the most sought-after teachers of introductory courses in methodology, as well as in his field of specialisation. He has a very dynamic style of presentation and has become widely recognised as a captivating communicator.
Numerous letters and other documents witness to the appreciation his present and former students hold for André’s teaching and constant availability. Having been chair of the department since 1994 has been an additional challenge, of course, but somehow André is still seen regularly in the cafeteria lunching and discussing with his students. Indeed he has succeeded in motivating a whole generation of students to pursue geography as one of the most relevant, applied and useful professions that exists in the modern world where the need for rational approaches to the use of a finite environment are becoming ever more important.
He has particularly stimulated graduate students through his leadership of what is called the weekly GEO-FORUM, where each student is required at some point to present his or her research topic. Professor Roy has acted as a catalyst in this context to engender a very high level of presentation and participation in this particular academic activity.
