The Canadian Geographer/Le Géographe canadien
Conditions of Submission
The submission of a manuscript is an implicit declaration that the work has not been published, in whole or in part, and is not being considered elsewhere. The Editorial Board considers a paper ineligible for publication if most of its content is:
(i) under consideration for publication or is published in a journal, or book chapter;
(ii) under consideration for publication or is published in a conference proceeding or a government publication, with a substantial circulation (distributed to 100 or more individuals over a wide area).
Exceptions are possible if the author has retained copyright and submitted manuscripts are substantially revised. For similar reasons, exceptions can be made for material appearing on the Internet. Authors should contact the editor to discuss such manuscripts prior to submission.
At the time of submission, the corresponding author will be required to:
(i) attest that the manuscript represents original work that is not being considered for publication, in whole or in part, by another journal;
(ii) state whether the manuscript is one of a kind, or part of a study or thesis from which other manuscripts may be generated;
(iii) confirm that all authors have read and approved the manuscript;
(iv) provide the names of any colleagues who reviewed the manuscript in its final stages;
If a manuscript is accepted, the corresponding author, acting on behalf of all co-authors, will have two additional obligations:
(v) if the paper includes any copyrighted material such as photo, map or diagram, the corresponding author will be responsible to secure signed written permission from the holder of the copyright to reproduce the material in both print and electronic formats and
(vi) to complete a copyright transfer form assigning copyright in the article including the abstract to the Canadian Association of Geographers/ l’Association canadienne des géographes.
For the latter two requirements, signed paper copies of the letters or forms must be sent to the Editor-in-Chief by post before the manuscript can be published.

Types of Submissions
For editorial purposes, submissions are classified as Human Geography, Physical Geography or Geographic Information Science and are published in English or French.
Research articles report original and previously unpublished research or a development of a theory or technique that significantly extends knowledge within Geography. Research articles must be accompanied by an abstract in either English or French. Accepted articles require abstracts in English and French. The length of Research Articles may vary from 5,000 to 15,000 words of text, including all text, tables, and illustrations.
Focus Essays are original studies that are shorter than conventional research articles or are research articles that report on themes of interest to the Geography research community but do not fit the conventions of research articles. Focus Essays are limited to 5,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. Focus essays may be grouped under a theme with a guest editor.
Review essays provide an organized critical synthesis of information on an important topic. Readers are invited to submit manuscripts that interpret and evaluate the underlying themes from a current body of related literature or that review critically one or a number of major works in ways that go beyond the normal book review. Review essays are limited to 4,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the editor should be sought before a reader undertakes a review essay.
Book reviews are commissioned by the review editor to review individual books of importance to Canadian readership. Readers willing to undertake reviews of books on specific subject areas are invited to contact the review editor. Unsolicited reviews may be accepted for publication, subject to external assessment.
Canadian Landform Examples present succinct explanatory descriptions for teaching use or for raising research questions in geomorphology. Physical Landform Examples should be limited to 3,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the Physical Geography editor should be sought before a reader prepares a submission.
Canadian Human Landscapes offer interpretive perspectives on human landscapes and papers should be limited to 3,000 words, including all text, tables, and illustrations. The advice of the Canadian Human Landscapes editor should be sought before a reader prepares a submission.
Commentaries present a response to published articles or an editorial or scholarly opinion. Commentary articles are generally limited to 1,000 words. Commentaries are published at the discretion of the editor and they are peer reviewed by the editor and two editorial board members.
Obituaries published in The Canadian Geographer conform to policies established by the
CAG executive. For further information on obituaries, please contact the editor.
Special Issues comprise a number of research articles that focus on a selected theme. The advice of the editor must be sought before undertaking a special issue. Persons interested in organizing and editing a special issue are requested to discuss their plans with the editor long in advance.

or French. They should be typed double-spaced in 12-point Times Roman. Pages should be numbered and right justified.

Title page should contain the full names of all authors, professional affiliation, and complete postal and e-mail addresses and identify the corresponding author. Acknowledgements should also be included on the title page.
Abstracts should not exceed 300 words and summarize the purpose, methodology, and
major findings of the paper in English or French.

Preserving Anonymity
The Canadian Geographer/Le Géographe canadien uses double-blind peer review and editors are careful to preserve the anonymity of authors and reviewers. Editorial staff prepare manuscripts for review by checking for identifying material in all the obvious locations and removing author names on the title page, removing acknowledgements, removing all hidden metadata, and by removing identifying material from headers and footers. Contributors are asked to assist in maintaining anonymity by not placing any identifying material in the text where it is not readily detected and by avoiding any auto-citation that is likely to reveal the author’s identity (e.g. forthcoming entries). Auto citation can be added later if necessary.
