In 2008 the Canadian Geographer (TCG) / Le Géographie canadien (LGC) announced TCG New Scholar Paper Award.  This award is to encourage new scholars to fully participate in the Association’s activities and establish TCG / LGC as a priority outlet for their research.

The first award was adjudicated in March 2008 and was based on articles published in volumes 50 and 51.  2008 TCG New Scholar Award for the best paper by a new scholar was awarded to:
- Martin Andresen (single author) Simon Fraser University
- Nathaniel bell (senior author of a multi-authored paper) Simon Fraser University 

This award has now been combined with the Wiley-Blackwell Award to form the Wiley-Blackwell New Scholar Publication Award.
