These groups provide a forum for members to focus on their particular subject in geography and many also organize special paper sessions at the CAG annual meetings. For more information on these study groups see below.

 

You must be a member of the CAG in order to join the CAG study groups. Members may join these groups by simply indicating the group(s) of their choice on their membership form and adding the additional fee to their total.​

1. Feminist Intersectional Solidarity Group (FIGS)

​

FIGS aims to provide a forum for people interested in issues of access, equity, and the well-being of women in geography and for those whose research is linked to questions of gender as they relate to relations of class, race/ethnicity, sexuality, nation/ality, and ability. FIGS particularly encourages student membership and participation in FIGS activities, including conference sessions, social events, newsletter contributions, and other opportunities. 2. Environment and Resources Study Group
 

The mission of the Environment and Resources Study Group is to promote effective environmental and resource management in Canada and abroad. Through regular meetings and newsletters, the study group serves as a forum for the exchange of expertise, information, and opinion between academics and practitioners on current issues of environmental and resource management.

3. Tourism and Recreation Study Group
 

The purpose of this group is to provide an opportunity for members to connect their research, work and/or learning pursuits in tourism, recreation and parks with other geographers across Canada. Our study group hosts a listserv and website (Coming soon), has quasi-quarterly electronic newsletters, sponsors sessions at the CAG and holds an annual business meeting. 4. Economic Geography Study Group

 

The Economic Geography Study Group seeks to bring together geographers from various specializations broadly concerned with the links between economy and society, and the transformations thereof. Interests across geographical scales, from globalization to local grassroots activism, and the reflexivities across these scales, fall within the scope of the group. Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to, industrial restructuring, gender and work, labour geographies, social polarization, and institutional geographies. 5. Marine Studies and Coastal Zone Management Study Group
 

The marine studies and coastal zone management study group is interested in promoting the study of all aspects of the worlds oceans and the coasts that surround them.

6. Health and Health Care Study Group
 

The purpose of the Geography of Health and Health Care Specialty Group (GHHCSG) is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information among researchers interested in health geography issues. Members are kept up-to-date of conference, employment and research opportunities through the use of an informal email distribution list and web page. Also see our Student Award.

7. Indigenous Peoples Working Group
 

This group was previously known as the “Native Canadians Study Group”. The change in name to “Indigenous Peoples” reflects our interest in geographic research involving indigenous peoples within as well as beyond Canada. In addition the term "working group" more aptly captures the collaborative relationships that tend to define research in this field. Also see our webpage (Coming soon).
The Canadian Association of Geographers (CAG), Statistics Canada, and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada annually award The Robin P. Armstrong Memorial Prize for Excellence in Native Studies to a graduate student in geography or native studies for the best Master's or Ph.D. thesis on an aboriginal topic. A cash prize of $500 is presented at the annual CAG conference to a student who, during the current or previous calendar year, has completed a Master's or PhD thesis in native studies or geography related to Canada's aboriginal peoples.

8. Rural Geography Study Group
 

The Rural Geography Study Group has been increasingly active over the past few years. Special sessions organized at the past two CAG meetings were well attended. The study group is currently planning to publish these papers.

9. Canadian Geomorphology Research Group (CGRG)
 

The CGRG was established in 1993 at the International Association of Geomorphology Congress in Hamilton, Ontario. The group presently has a membership with representation in all parts of Canada and scattered outposts in the U.S. and elsewhere and provides a strong voice for geomorphology in Canada. 10. Public Policy Issues Study Group
 

The group was previously known as the Public Issues Study Group, but there was a decision to change the name in order to give it a sharper focus on geographical aspects of public policy. The study of economic, environmental, social and urban policy is particularly important to the group's agenda, but geographers interested in spatial and regional aspects of all policy issues are welcome to participate and contribute their expertise.

11. Geographic Information Science Study Group (GIS-SIG)
 

Welcome to the GIScience Study Group of the Canadian Association of Geographers. We are a subset of CAG members with interests touching various aspects of GIScience in Canada. We aim to foster a culture of collaboration, student training, and academic excellence and provide substantial support to our student members through travel grants and awards. 12. Geographies of Asia Study Group
 

This study group's main interest is to support and encourage the study of Asia in the Canadian geographic community. By providing a point of contact for geographers with an interest in Asia, the group facilitates the sharing of research news and information on relevant issues among faculty and graduate students. The study group is setting up an email list for members and organizes Asia-focused special sessions at the annual conference, in which graduate students are particularly encouraged to participate.

13. Geographic Education Study Group
 

The mission of the CAG Geographic Education Study Group is to promote geographic education, and the understanding of geographic education, at all levels and to research, promote, and liaise on behalf of geographic education and especially in ways that could be beneficial to CAG members in their own work. The Geographic Education website, sponsored by the CAG Education Study Group provides various resources and links to resources pertinent to geographic education in Canada.

14. Diversity, Migration, Ethnicity and Race Study Group
 

The Diversity, Migration, Ethnicity and Race Group provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and information within the C.A.G. on issues concerning social diversity, international migration and the settlement of immigrants and refugees and the intersection  of various aspects of diversity such as ethnicity, “race”, gender, and class. The group will promote the common interests of persons interested in these issues through an electronic newsletter, an e-mail listserve and organizing special sessions at CAG meetings. The group is particularly committed to engaging graduate students in its activities.

16. Urban Geography Study Group
 

The Urban Geography Study Group aims to create a forum for researchers interested in 'the city' and 'the urban', broadly conceived, including: urban space; urban culture; urban society; urban policy and politics; urban morphology,design and planning; urban decline; urbanisation; urban development, regeneration, renewal and restructuring; new urbanism; cities in Canada and the wider world; and cities and globalization. UGSG will aim to encourage student membership and involvement in all aspects of our work, including meetings, conferences, media and publications, and to contribute to debates within CAG /ACG and in the wider worlds of urban geography and urban studies.
