Field Trips

*Please note: All Field Trips, with the exception of Field Trip A - Townie Walk, are scheduled for Sundy, August 18th and do overlap. When registering, please select only ONE of the Sunday Field Trips. Thank you.

Field Trip A - Townie Walk

Cost: Included with Registration

Date: Wednesday, August 14th   Duration: 2.5 hrs

Details: Start - 2pm @ MUN Science Building

     End - 4:30pm @ Bannerman Brewery

Description: 

Join Arn Keeling and Nick Lynch for a relaxing pre-conference stroll from Memorial University campus to St. John’s harbour. Along the way, explore urban rivers, historic neighbourhoods, parks, and the downtown harbourfront. This is a 2-hour, 3.5 km easy walk along packed trails and sidewalks—comfortable walking shoes recommended. No registration required.

Field Trip B - Fishing for Success (2 Options)

Cost: Option 1: Land Skills & Fish Supper - $80

          Option 2: Land & Sea Skills & Fish Supper- $120

Date: Sunday, August 18th   Duration: 7 hrs

Details: Start - 1:30pm @ MUN Science Building

     End - 8:30pm @ MUN Science Building

Description: 

Join Dean Bavington and Fishing for Success on an adventure of a lifetime! Participants have the choice of engaging in land skills (including weaving rope, rinding sticks, caulking dories, and knitting net) and preparing a meal (freshly caught fish with tongue cutting lesson and traditional boiled beans and root vegetable dish) (option 1); or, joining a fishing trip and engaging in land skills and food preparation (option 2). The trip includes bus transportation, nutrition breaks, meal, beverages & dessert. Waterproof outerwear suggested.

Option 1 - Limited to 10 Participants

Option 2 - Limited to 30 Participants

Field Trip C - Cape Spear Hike & Picnic

Cost: $45 per person 

Date: Sunday, August 18th   Duration: 4 hrs

Details: Start - 9am @ MUN Science Building

     End - 1pm @ MUN Science Building

Description: 

Join Carissa Brown for an exciting but moderate 2-hour hike on the famous East Coast Trail. The route will include the Cape Spear lighthouse, WWII coastal defense batteries, bogs and fens (on boardwalks), inverted treelines, breathtaking views of the ocean and hopefully an opportunity to sample the year’s berry crop. The trip will include a gourmet picnic lunch from the Postmaster's Bakery and bus transportation. Hiking clothing, good walking shoes or hiking boots, and water bottles are recommended.

Limited to 40 Participants

Field Trip D - Brigus and Beyond

Cost: $62 per person 

Date: Sunday, August 18th   Duration: 7 hrs

Details: Start - 9am @ MUN Science Building

     End - 4pm @ MUN Science Building

Description: 

Join Norm Catto for an exploration of Brigus, an historic fishing community 80 kilometers from St. John's. On this trip you will see the area's rich architectural history reflective of its English, Irish, and Welsh heritage, and discover the region's diverse coastal geographies. The trip includes bus transportation, a boxed lunch and beverage. Hiking clothing, good walking shoes or hiking boots, and water bottles are recommended.
